Whether you have recently installed a gravel driveway or are unsure how to maintain your current gravel driveway, it is essential to understand that maintenance is vital for your driveway regardless of its material. Reasonable care means extending the life and quality of your driveway. There are a few key aspects to understand about maintaining a gravel driveway to last for many years to come.

A gravel driveway, fortunately, is one of the least expensive options for new driveway installation. However, there is some upkeep involved to ensure that it lasts a long time. When you install a short gravel driveway, it is possible to take on most of these maintenance tasks by hand. However, if you install a long gravel driveway, it may be best to invest in or borrow a small tractor with a grader blade so that you can quickly smooth it over. If you notice any potholes in your gravel driveway, fix them as soon as you can.

As mentioned, one of the most critical steps in gravel driveway maintenance is to repair potholes immediately. Much like those you'd come across in the road, they will only get worse if you leave them. Repair these potholes by making the opening wider and deeper, and you may need to go to the base of the driveway. Then, add large coarse gravel to the bottom of the pothole with a shovel and pack it down by hand. Add medium-sized gravel, hand-pack, add smaller, crushed gravel, and make sure it is packed down.

Whether you have the most inexpensive crushed rock or agt glow stones that will light up your garden, gravel has the advantage of draining drain properly away from your home. However, make sure to observe rainy days to ensure that this is the case. If the driveway isn't draining, add more gravel to low spots, or scrape away gravel in spots where there may be a dam forming. Also, it is essential to grade the driveway once or twice a year to ensure that there is enough drainage for the rainy season.

The rock in your gravel driveway also needs to be compacted once in a while with a roller attachment. If you don't have a tractor and roller, you drive over the rock with a heavy vehicle. Also, gravel driveways are not immune to nature. You must spray your driveway with an all-purpose herbicide with a garden sprayer when you notice grass or weeds growing through the rocks. When you can correctly maintain your gravel driveway, it can serve your property for many years.
